Reduce, Reuse
and Recycle Guide
For San Mateo County

The average home uses and stores more than 60 hazardous products! Cleaners, pesticides
and herbicides contain toxic materials that are not healthy for people, animals, and the
environment. Cats, dogs and other animals can be harmed from exposure to chemicals and
fertilizers on lawns and in landscaping. Rainfall and the watering of lawns wash these toxins
into the storm drains that empty straight into creeks, the bay and ocean without any type of
treatment. This runoff harms aquatic wildlife and toxins work their way up the food chain
to humans.
Switch to non-toxic products because they are better for you, your family, pets and the
environment. Find more information on non-toxic gardening, pest management, and
household cleaning at www. owstobay.org. If you have any hazardous waste to dispose of,
please see page 9.
Easy tips to reduce waste:
Purchase items in bulk to reduce packaging.
Purchase items that are produced and grown close to home.
Rent or borrow items instead of buying new ones.
Use reusable items such as shopping bags, water bottles, travel mugs, foodware
(plates, cups, and utensils), cloth napkins, pens, pencils, razors and rechargeable
batteries.
Visit www.stopjunkmail.org to learn how to reduce unwanted mail.
Pack waste free lunches for school and work.
Reuse one-sided paper for printing or creating note pads.
Repair items such as clothes, shoes, electronics, and furniture. Do it yourself or use
local seamstresses, shoe cobblers, repair shops and furniture restoration shops.
Backyard Composting Workshops
These two-hour workshops are offered throughout
the year. Learn how easy and fun it is to recycle your
fruit and vegetable scraps, leaves, and plant cuttings
into compost! Compost provides valuable nutrients
for your garden soil, helps retain moisture which saves
water, suppresses weeds, prevents soil erosion, and
loosens clay and compacted soils for better drainage
and water retention. It is rewarding to know you are
turning what some consider waste into a nutrient rich
organic material for your garden!
Master Compost and Solid Waste Course
This is an eight-week intensive course that is held
once per year. Learn in-depth knowledge of backyard
and vermicomposting, an understanding of soil
biodiversity and all the bene ts of adding compost
to your soil, and an overview of waste reduction
practices. The course is instructed in a hands-on
style that teaches participants concrete skills, as well
as the theory behind those skills. The Sustainability
Academy is designed to educate San Mateo County
community members about resource conservation and
to empower them to promote resource conservation
in their communities.

Manufacturing goods from recycled materials typically requires less
energy and water than producing goods from virgin materials. When
energy demands are decreased, fewer fossil fuels are burned, and less
carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere.

Recycling Companies
Close the Loop and Buy Recycled Products
Recycling cans, bottles, paper and other materials is
the  rst step in the recycling process. Take the next
step by shopping for products made from recycled
materials. When you buy recycled products, you
close the loop by incentivising manufacturers to use
recycled materials to create their goods. Something
isn’t recycled unless you buy the end product.
Buying products made from recycled materials is a
simple way to help the environment and ensure the
long-term success of curbside recycling programs.
There are a variety of products made from
recyclables, such as many types of paper, cereal and
tissue boxes, toilet paper, plastic lumber and much
more. One ton or 40 cases of recycled paper saves:
17 trees, 7000 gallons of water and 4100 kwh of
energy, enough to power the average home for 6
months, 60 pounds of air pollution and 2.5 cubic
yards of land ll space.
When shopping, look for products containing the
highest percentage of post-consumer recycled
material you can  nd. Post-consumer recycled
products are made from the materials you set out at
the curbside.
Look for the recycling symbol and a statement that
the product is made from post-consumer recycled
material:
If post-consumer recycled content products are
not available at the stores where you shop, ask the
store manager to begin stocking these products.
Shopping online for items with recycled content
is another option. Write to manufacturers and ask
that they begin producing products with recycled
content. Encourage others in your neighborhood,
of ce and community to buy recycled products.
